State says Texas Southern University mismanages endowments
(8/16/06 - HOUSTON) - Texas Southern University, who recently fired its president for misspending school funds, has mismanaged its endowments, according to a State Auditor's Office report released Wednesday.

The report criticized the university for spending the principal on the endowments' investments, which is supposed to stay intact; ineffective record keeping, poor monitoring of whether donors' restrictions on the money was followed; unproductive investment practices and inequitable distribution of endowments.
The university has agreed to take the auditor's recommended steps to fix the problems by Feb. 1, 2007, both the state and the university said.
"The institution is strongly committed to upholding high professional and ethical standards," Winifred King, spokeswoman for the state-funded, historically black university, said in a statement.
The report was issued less than a month after former university President Priscilla Slade was indicted by a grand jury on two charges of criminally misusing university money for her private benefit. University regents fired Slade in June.
TSU is one of four area universities to be audited this year; the University of Houston, University of North Texas and Texas Woman's University are also on the list.
TSU had 78 endowments totaling $23 million at the end of February, the auditor's report said. Most were established to award scholarships and professorships.
The university spent at least $285,934 from the principal of eight endowments. The amount may be more than that, the report says, but exact amounts "cannot be determined because of the university's poor record keeping."
Donors who made endowments before 2001 had no written agreements specifying restrictions, the report said. Some university records of additional endowment contributions are inaccurate or "significantly incomplete," according to the auditor's office.
The university's investment performance has consistently been below the target rate. In the past five years, the university has distributed 5 percent of the market value of endowment investments every year, even though it was losing money at a rate of 1.4 percent.
Last year, the distribution rate from the pool of all endowments was 5 percent of the previous three years' average market values of investments. Yet, when it came to distributing the money to individuals, the rate ranged from less than half a percent to about 6.5 percent.

I absolutely love Texas Southern University on so many levels. As a child whose household needs were met with a TSU paycheck, to a student /workstudy worker, to a alum twice over, to finally earning a job title (doing work I love love love) at TSU, to now having to say, I gave TSU 3 of the best years of my life.
I have no regrets about what has happened to me regarding my lay-off! Let's face it, although this blog has been and I'm sure it will continue to be very insightful, entertaining, and stress relieving...it is what it is! TSU has been in trouble for years, and years, and years, and years, and years, and years. AND yes, most of the names your blogg had mentioned have been doing their thang for decades! Blogging is great but when are we going to decide to breake the CYCLE! We can't get rid of a cancer by simply cutting out the infection, you must cut , rempove the entire infected area , and oft times the cancer has progressed too far to cure ...sometimes you have to just wait the slow death out. SO, what am I saying, If we want to see a new and improved TSU, you got to wait to tho old one dies or start getting rid of the infection in huge chunks...the board, most of the faculty, most of the staff, create a NEW PARADIGM SHIFT...tweek our MISSIONshit do we remember it???? WTF was our real purpose ????? I say fire everybody, get rid of the entire board, review/revise job descriptions, HIRE ONLY THOSE QUALIFIED AND WHOSE PERSONALITIES REFLECT THE NEW TSU. A TSU that remembers it's freakin' purpose everyday it lives and breathes. If the campus is gasping for air I say let it DIE...the resurection is ALWAYS better! I love TSU "...tre'ward 4-eva !!!!!!!!!" Yall ni66as need to get off the gas and remember WTF we are supposed to be doin! This shit was neva erected to line ya fuckin pockets. TSU was designed to help the community, enrich the lives of African American boys and girls who had dreams of something other than selling ass, crack, plain ole bullshit. they get to the place of salvation only to find that the pimps, hoes and pushers are running the fuckin university...4-real TSU GET OFF THE FUCKIN" GAS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

While I find the blogs interesting at best, and a source of laughter gossip at worse, the methods used, IMO, doesn't do due justice to the University.
Frustrations can bring out anger, resentment, etc. etc., but in the end is the negative publicity going to turn out with positive results for the university. Do you believe that parents of prospective students will seriously consider TSU as the university to educate their children after reading this site? Respect for those we may disagree with can have a way of making a bad situation end in a positive light.
I don't disagree that maybe some change could be in order, but at the same time, if your powerful leaders are the source of ridicule, cartoons, F bombs, and an assortment of degrading terms, I can't believe that a powerless student will be perceieved or treated any differently. Sure, at orientation the parents will be dazzled, but by year two, if that same student displays concerns or disagreement with whoever is in charge, will more than likely be chewed up and spit out in the same fashion that has been displayed on this site.
Somehow, Dr. Slade managed to last seven years, which actually helps the turnover numbers in the office of the presidency. For a while it really seemed to be a revolving door there. Makes one wonder if all of the president's were actually that bad, or perhaps those who are seeking to replace them managed to cause enough unrest to keep the seek to destroy tradition going.
